Beginning String Class

for Mount Calvary Homeschoolers

Rebecca Grove, instructor

Your child, age 8 and up, has the opportunity to learn to play violin, viola, cello, or bass in a fun class environment. The class camaraderie often motivates young people to excel.

Why should my child learn to play a string instrument? To glorify God in worship and to exhibit God’s character of beauty, order, and creativity. Instrumental music utilizes enjoyable teamwork and collaboration, and this is an activity that your children can participate in the rest of their lives!

How much does it cost? If there are four or more students, the price is only $15 a week! If there are three students, it’s a great deal at $20 a week. If two students, it’s still a wonderful deal at $24 a week. You can rent an instrument through a store or for a very low fee from me.

How much time will it take?

  1. The class will meet once a week for 50 minutes, and then each student will have a 15-minute online or in-person (you pick) private session during the week. This helps students to not practice incorrectly for a whole week, and gives them individual attention. Also, I will be available at church from 4:30 to 5:20 most Sunday evenings for help without extra cost.

  2. Practice time will start out at 10 minutes a day for five days and build up to 20-25 minutes for five days by December. Of course, the 15-minute session with me will count as practice time.

Where does it meet? At Mount Calvary Baptist Church.

When does it meet? That’s where I need your guidance. Let me know which of these potential times work for you. This two-semester class will begin the week of August 31.

  1. We could meet in correlation with the Level 1 Bells, so that younger siblings could meet string class at the same time as the Bells, or we could meet right before Level 1 Bells if students want to do both.

  2. We could meet sometime on Monday or Thursday, or on Friday morning. What times will work for you? Your answering these questions will not obligate you. To answer, or if you have questions, please scroll down to the orange button and ask me!

“We loved the Beginning String class! The fun of learning and playing music with other students was exactly what my daughter needed! Mrs. Grove is extremely organized, punctual, and thorough. She’s very positive and utilizes creative strategies. I appreciate her attention to detail and excellence, while still making it fun. I highly recommend this class!”

What are your qualifications to teach strings? I taught many string classes in my 26 years on the string faculty of Bob Jones University. Most of those were at the Elementary School. I also taught the Junior High Orchestra, String Pedagogy classes for University string majors, and many many private lessons for every age and ability.

What else do you offer? If there is enough interest, I will offer an Intermediate class in 2027-2028. Of course, private lessons are always available at a very reasonable price.

I would love to teach your child to play a string instrument for the Lord! Please click on the button below to contact me, or call me at 864-517-6839. Ask any questions you have, and tell me your child’s (children’s) age(s) and which instrument(s) they would like to learn. I need to hear from you by Saturday, August 22. Thank you!
